iPod Explorer is an Apple iPod backup tool for Windows. It allows you to copy your music or videos from your iPod to your computer. The application uses a very ingenious way to let you browse, find, and backup your songs or videos. Instead of showing you all the files in a graphical user interface, iPod Explorer creates a virtual drive on your computer which contains all the music and videos on your iPod. This folder can be accessed from Windows Explorer. A new drive letter will be assigned to this folder and you can simply go into the folder and select any file that you want to backup and copy it and paste it into a new folder. Any application in your system will also be able to access those files, so you can use other audio players to listen to the music on your iPod.
It should be noted that this application doesn't have a user interface. All you have to do is open it and the folder will appear under "My Computer". There is a screen during the installation wizard that makes a note of this lack of a GUI.
In my case, my iPod 5G was instantly detected, and the new drive appeared very quickly. I was able to browse it and copy files at will.
